The Ownership History of Alfa Romeo

While Alfa Romeo is a long-respected brand in the automotive industry and for decades it held up as a standalone brand, we often hear the question, “Who owns Alfa Romeo now?” Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) purchased the automaker in 2007 and then later merged with the PSA group to form Stellantis.

Fiat and Chrysler are two of the longest-standing and respected auto brands on the planet and have done a great job driving Alfa Romeo into its most modern form, but the history of ownership and creativity of this brand is extensive and fascinating!

The History of Alfa Romeo

Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or ALFA, was founded in June of 1910 in Milan, Italy, and as early as 1911 its vehicles were already heavily involved in sports racing throughout Europe.

In 1932, the automaker was owned by a state holding in Italy, and it remained that way through 1986. However, during that time, Alfa Romeo became part of the Fiat group, which is what brought them into the merger with Chrysler in 2007.

In early 2021, the PSA group (which owned Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Vauxhall, and Opel) merged with FCA (which owned Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Jeep, and Alfa Romeo) to form Stellantis, and that’s where things stand.
